Alert Details

A favorable weather pattern for corn earworm migration is expected to envelop the majority of the corn-growing region over the course of the next several days. Some flights have already occurred in the past few weeks, and additional flights are probable especially during the upcoming weekend and into early next week prior to what looks to be the first strong cold front of the late summer/early fall season. Low risks are in place tonight into tomorrow mainly across the Plains states as southerly winds just begin to increase in the western areas. Low risks then spread east to near Lake Michigan and into Illinois tomorrow night into Saturday. By late Saturday into Sunday, south to southwest winds are expected to increase further as high pressure drifts off to the southeast, and Moderate migration risks are predicted from Nebraska east into Iowa and north into South Dakota, Minnesota, and western Wisconsin. The Moderate risk remains in place through early next week, with the main focus being from Minnesota and Iowa east into Wisconsin and Illinois late Sunday into Monday, and finally across the Great Lakes region and eastern corn-growing region ahead of the cold front expected to sweep through Monday into Tuesday next week. Growers with crops at susceptible stages to damage should monitor traps and scout fields regularly as new moths may have already arrived, and prospects for additional moths are definitely present again this weekend into early next week.
