After a rather prolonged period of dominant northwest flow across much of the corn-growing region for the past week or so, it does appear the overall weather pattern may shift back to more zonal or even southwesterly flow by late this week and into next weekend. The result will not only be an increase in southerly winds and warmth/humidity once again, but also increased prospects for corn earworm migration. Low migration risks are predicted generally west of a Wausau, Wisconsin to Quincy, Illinois line by Thursday night into Friday, with the Low risk area expanding east to Lake Michigan and into Illinois by Friday night into Saturday as low pressure organizes in the High Plains and as high pressure moves from the Great Lakes region into the eastern United States. Only Low risks are in the forecast for now, but if a more concentrated area of gusty southerly winds appears likely, then elevated risks may be introduced to the forecast so stay tuned for future forecasts later this week.
