Corn earworm migration probabilities will return to the corn-growing region by late this week and into the weekend as south to southwest winds return to the region. The overall weather pattern, however, is expected to be dominated by west or northwest flow so any corn earworm flights should be rather isolated in nature and more likely closer to active source regions in the mid-south. Low risks return to fields in Kansas, Nebraska, southern South Dakota, extreme southern Minnesota, Iowa, and Missouri tomorrow night into Friday morning as southerly winds and potentially some precipitation return to the region. Low risks expand further east and slightly north as we move into the weekend especially as high pressure slides back into the southeastern United States. It appears that the overall northwest flow weather pattern may become even more amplified as we move into next week, so a cold front may pass through the corn-growing region by late in the weekend or early next week. If this comes to pass, migration risks will not persist past Sunday. Growers all across the corn-growing region are encouraged to continue to check their traps and also scout in fields that are at susceptible stages to damage as some isolated to scattered flights have occurred in some regions in the last few weeks.
