Soybean Aphid
Soybean aphid development risks have been increased into the Moderate category from far eastern South Dakota into extreme northern Iowa, southern Minnesota, and western Wisconsin. The Moderate risk area focuses to the south of where heavy to excessive rainfall has occurred in the last week further to the north as these heavy rains usually help to reduce present aphid populations. Growers within the Moderate risk area are encouraged to increase scouting efforts especially if soybean fields are in the early reproductive stages of growth. Weather forecasts are showing signs of rainfall this weekend and the potential for very warm to hot temperatures later next week, but the heat does not look to last very long. As a result, aphid populations may hold firm or even drop a little bit late next week, but could rebound thereafter. Recent reports from Wisconsin indicate that soybean aphid populations have increased in some fields in that state, so additional scouting is warranted at this time. Low risks continue from the eastern Dakotas into northwest and central Minnesota as well as into additional fields in Wisconsin, far northern Illinois, and also into northern Iowa.
