Black Cutworm
Low black cutworm migration risks are predicted tonight into tomorrow morning from northern Kentucky northeast into eastern Indiana, Ohio, southeast lower Michigan, and also into southern Ontario, Canada. A strong low pressure area is likely to move from Illinois northeast into the southern Great Lakes region overnight tonight into tomorrow morning with south to southwest winds ahead of it. Precipitation is also likely ahead of a trailing cold front, but there may still be opportunities for mainly isolated moth flights in the warm sector to the east of the front overnight across the eastern corn-growing region. A potentially more substantial black cutworm moth flight is expected this weekend into early next week as another strong low pressure system moves through the corn-growing region. Low migration risks are in the forecast mainly west of the Great Lakes Saturday night into Sunday morning. The risk then spreads east Sunday night into Monday and increases into the Moderate category from Illinois northeast into Indiana, western Ohio, and lower Michigan. Growers should monitor subsequent forecasts as these early-season moth flights can result in the black cutworm populations that damage crops once they emerge later this spring.
