Corn Earworm
Corn earworm migration risks return to the forecast tomorrow night into Thursday as southerly winds increase especially across the Plains states but potentially as far east as the I-35 corridor from Minnesota south into Iowa and far northwest Missouri and eastern Kansas. As low pressure deepens across southern Canada, southerly winds are expected to increase and eventually spread to the east, as well, by late week and into next weekend. High pressure may hold pretty firm over the eastern corn-growing region until the weekend, so corn earworm migration risks look more focused especially along/west of Lake Michigan but some Low risks are extended into southern lower Michigan, Indiana, and western Kentucky by Friday and into the weekend. It is likely that risk upgrades will be issued in subsequent forecasts this week, with the most likely areas to see elevated migration risks being west of Lake Michigan from Minnesota and Iowa east into Illinois and Wisconsin. Given the more widespread processing and fresh market acreage in this area, these growers should prepare now for potential new corn earworm moth flights that are expected to occur especially next weekend.
