Corn Earworm
A cold front is predicted to move through the corn-growing region over the next 24-36 hours. Southerly winds are likely east of the front along with at least scattered, if not widespread at times, precipitation. A favorable origin point for these southerly winds exists in the mid-south and lower Mississippi River valley, so even despite a relatively short time period for these southerly winds, we are still predicting a Moderate corn earworm migration risk into especially the southern Great Lakes region from Wisconsin and northern Illinois east into Indiana, Ohio, and the southern third to half of lower Michigan tonight into tomorrow morning. Low risks extend as far west as the I-35 corridor and east into southern Ontario, Canada as well as eastern Ohio and Kentucky. Little to migration risk is predicted into early next week once this front passes, but fresh market and processing growers should keep a close eye on traps and also scout vulnerable fields as it is probable that some new flights occurred into the corn-growing region this week given the observed and predicted weather pattern.
