High corn rootworm risks remain in the forecast across more intensive corn acreage portions of the corn-growing region, including much of Kansas, Nebraska, South and North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, northern Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, lower Michigan, and into southern Ontario, Canada. Moderate risks on the fringe acreage states of eastern Colorado, western Nebraska, central Dakotas, and then further east mainly in the Great Lakes area as well as further into southeastern Ontario, Canada. The High risk has been reduced a little on the far southern end of the corn-growing region in Kansas and Missouri mainly for a more advanced crop in this area. Growers should be on the alert for increased beetle pressure and should monitor counts not only for this year’s crop but high beetle populations may indicate the need for adjustments to planting intentions or soil treatment needs going into the 2025 crop. Silk clipping will be a concern in the near term especially in fields with fresh silks and higher beetle populations.
