Alert Details

The annual western bean cutworm moth flight continues, although we are beginning to see signs that the peak flight is now shifting further north in response to higher heat unit accumulations and more advanced crop stages in some areas. High risk remain in Nebraska, with Moderate risks found in far northern Kansas and northeast Colorado, and then additional Moderate risks are found in the Great Lakes area including Wisconsin, far northern Indiana and Ohio, lower Michigan, and east into southern Ontario and southwestern Quebec, Canada. The elevated risks have been trimmed in southern Nebraska as well as in southern Wisconsin as well as further east in Indiana and Ohio where peak flight appears to be past now and where counts are dropping. Growers in or near any risk area, however, should continue to monitor traps and more importantly, regularly scout vulnerable fields as the treatment window for western bean cutworms is rather narrow to be most effective.
