Alert Details

Moderate western bean cutworm risks remain in place across specific areas of the corn-growing region in the next week as the annual flight continues. Moderate risks are in place across much of Nebraska and western Iowa as well as Wisconsin, far eastern Illinois, northern Indiana, southern lower Michigan, northern Ohio, and now southern Ontario, Canada where moth pressure is the greatest but is still rather scattered in nature. Overall, across the majority of the corn-growing region, moth pressure so far this year has not been at a comparably high level as previous years so the resultant egg-laying and economic damage has also not been as intense but some problems are still occurring. The flight is beginning to subside in southern areas but it is picking up further to the north. Fields in central and northern Wisconsin as well as central and eastern lower Michigan should see moth increases in the next week as should those in southern Ontario, Canada especially closer to the United States and the Great Lakes. Growers located especially within the Moderate risk areas should continue to monitor trap catches and their fields as scattered problems from western bean cutworm are still continuing in isolated to scattered regions, but the overall risk is now shifting north with increased heat unit accumulations and advancement of the crop.
